My Personal Professional Teaching and Learning Philosophy
Throughout my teaching experiences i have formed my own values, beliefs and philosophies. As a teacher I strive to create an environment where learning and teaching is enjoyable, exciting and hands on. Being exposed to many different teaching and learning styles i can now confirmed that i relate closely to a constructivist framework. I believe that meaningful learning occurs when students are actively try to make sense of the world and use their prior knowledge and experiences to assist in forming new ideas. Following on from this, I am a strong believer that material taught in schools need to be relevant to students interests and life outside of the school setting. I believe that when the students can personally relate to the material they are going to be more motivated to extend their learning. I wish to prepare my students not just for the following year but encourage them to develop lifelong skills such as problem solving, resilience and cooperation.
I wish to create a learning environment where each student has an equal opportunity to grow, not only intellectual but physically, socially and emotionally. I hope the students feel safe and confident to grow under my supervision. I strive to make the learning environment a place where children can be inquirers, investigators and leaders of their own learning. “If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way we learn”, I believe that this idea of Ignacio Estrada’s is integral to successful learning. As a teacher I believe it is vital to be flexible and use a variety and balance of methods and materials as not all children learn the same and we need to cater for their individual needs. I place a great deal of importance not on the outcome of the students work but on their thought and learning process and I hope to convey this is my lessons.
I will make it my primary objective to create meaningful and positive relationships with my students. I will strive to take an interest in each individual student and make them feel appreciated, valued and safe. Having this positive relationship and knowing their strengths, weaknesses and interest will also assist in finding their preferred learning environment. I believe that learning stops so as a growing teacher i will make it my duty to continue my own professional learning by reflecting, evaluating and improving my performance. Learning new skills and extending my knowledge will be a priority in my career.
